EAST ANGLIAN REGIONAL ROUND 10 - Braintree 12/09/11

Braintree BMX Club were host to the final round of the East Anglia summer series and 28 riders from the Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club made the trip into Essex to chase points for their own and the club’s rankings to ensure the Rockets maintained their lead in the regional rankings.  Whilst the weather stayed dry the blustery winds made it difficult for riders of all ages with the younger ones fighting hard into head winds and the older riders finding it hard to control their jumps as the wind swirled around.

Royston had 5 novice riders taking part in the event and the action started in the 7 and under class with Harriet Alexander taking a fine 2nd place ahead of team mates and brothers Isaac and Jed Warwick took 6th and 8th respectively and in the 8 -10 yr Novice category Sydney Newman took 2nd with Bradley Marvel taking 8th.

Moving into the expert classes Joshua Abbott took 2nd place in the 6 & Under final and in the 7yr class the win went to Elliott Bowyer with Joshua Izzard taking 3rd in his first event at this level having moved up from novice after the previous round and the class 4th place went to Alex Burgess. The 8yr male class saw Royston two riders, Callum Barrow and Brendan Salmon taking 1st and 2nd respectively in the class B final whilst in the 9yr class saw Alfie Salmon take 4th just inches ahead of Kele Newall in 5th.  James King took a 3rd place in the10 year class and team mate Ted Dalleywater was not far behind in 6th and in the girls 9-10 yr class the 3rd place went to Ella Tomsett. In the 11 year class the win went to Miles Fisher with Daniel Blanche finishing in 3rd after yet another race long battle for the top positions and the 6th place went to Matthew Fraser. The 12yr class saw another clear win by Aaron Dalleywater and in the 13 year class Ethan Vernon took 4th and in the B final 2nd position was taken by another of Royston’s new riders, James Kirby.  In the15yr category, Sam Manser fought the conditions to grab 5th place and in the 17-24yr category Andrew Brooker made the A final where he finished in 7th whilst in the Masters class (30+) Lee Alexander took 2nd with Alex Shore Nye taking 5th. The 24” wheeled “Cruisers” classes saw more points won for the club with Helen Nichol taking 2nd place and Matt Salmon who took 2nd in the 35-39yr category.

The final calculations showed Royston had held onto the lead in the club rankings with 2876 points – just 12.5 points ahead of the Braintree club whose home track advantage made the result uncertain until the final races were completed.

The next, and biggest, event on the calendar is the British Championships over the weekend of September 23rd - 25th at the Cheddar International track and the Rockets have 25 riders qualified for the event which this year is expected to attract almost 1000 competitors.

Royston’s own Tuesday clubs nights have now finished as it is too dark to ride safely and a winter calendar is being planned around the British Cycling regional BMX schedule.
