EAST ANGLIAN V
MIDLANDS INTER REGIONAL PETERBOROUGH 17.04.11
The main BMX Summer
schedule started last Sunday with the first round of the annual East
Anglia v The Midlands Inter-Regional on the Peterborough BMX track.
The track and surroundings have seen a lot of work over the winter
months to get it ready for the first national event of the year in
two weeks time which made it an ideal time for rider across the
country to gain more track knowledge and with the sun shining all
day the 426 riders made this the largest East Anglian BMX Regional
race in recent times.
Royston had 23
riders registered for the event to start their campaign to qualify
for the British Championships in September. With all ages and
abilities catered for the action started with the novice classes
where Sam Newell too 4th in the 14-16 category whilst in
the “expert” classes the racing got under way with the 6 & Under
class where Joshua Abbott took 6th and the 7yr class was
led home by Royston’s Elliott Bowyer. In the 8yr class both Callum
Barrow and Daniel Biggs just failed to make the semi finals and in
the 9 year class the same fate befell Kele Newell whilst Alfie
Salmon went one better and took 7th place in the B final.
In the 10 year class James King and Ted Dalleywater both made the
main final with James taking 6th and Ted in 8th place with team
mate Marmaduke Birt finishing in 4th in the B final. The
11 year class saw Miles Fisher taking 2nd in the A final
just ahead of Daniel Blanche who grabbed 4th on the line.
The 12yr class saw Royston’s Aaron Dalleywater on form from the
start to take 1st place and in the 13yr class Ethan
Vernon took a solid 3rd place. The 15yr class saw James
Handleigh take 1st place in the B final whilst in the
largest class of the day, the 17-24 males, with no less than 54
competitors Andrew Brooker just failed to make the quarter finals.
Royston had three riders in the Masters category (30+) with Alex
Shore-Nye missing out on a semi final place but Adam Richards took 2nd
in the B final and Richard Townsend took 4th in the main
A final and in the Veteran class (40+), Lee Alexander showed that
his recent mountain bike experiences in South Africa have not dulled
his BMX sprint skills with a clear win. The final classes of the day
were the riders on the 24” wheeled “Cruisers” and the ladies 17-29
class saw the win going to Helen Nicholl whilst in the men’s 35-39
class Matt Salmon took 3rd in the B final and in the 45+
class Carl Birt qualified for the A final where he finished in 2nd
to round off another fine days racing for the Rockets.
The next event on
the regional race calendar is the first round of the East Anglia v
South Challenge which is being hosted by the Barking and Dagenham
club on May 8th but before that the regional riders will
be out n force at the first national race of the year at
Peterborough over the 1st May weekend.
