East Anglia BMX Summer Series Round 1

EAST ANGLIAN V MIDLANDS INTER REGIONAL  PETERBOROUGH 17.04.11

The main BMX Summer schedule started last Sunday with the first round of the annual East Anglia v The Midlands Inter-Regional on the Peterborough BMX track. The track and surroundings have seen a lot of work over the winter months to get it ready for the first national event of the year in two weeks time which made it an ideal time for rider across the country to gain more track knowledge and with the sun shining all day the 426 riders made this the largest East Anglian BMX Regional race in recent times.

Royston had 23 riders registered for the event to start their campaign to qualify for the British Championships in September. With all ages and abilities catered for the action started with the novice classes where Sam Newell too 4th in the 14-16 category whilst in the “expert” classes the racing got under way with the 6 & Under class where Joshua Abbott took 6th and the 7yr class was led home by Royston’s  Elliott Bowyer. In the 8yr class both Callum Barrow and Daniel Biggs just failed to make the semi finals and in the 9 year class the same fate befell Kele Newell whilst Alfie Salmon went one better and took 7th place in the B final. In the 10 year class James King and Ted Dalleywater both made the main final with James taking 6th and Ted  in 8th place with team mate Marmaduke Birt finishing in 4th in the B final. The 11 year class saw Miles Fisher taking 2nd in the A final just ahead of Daniel Blanche who grabbed 4th on the line. The 12yr class saw Royston’s Aaron Dalleywater on form from the start to take 1st place and in the 13yr class Ethan Vernon took a solid 3rd place. The 15yr class saw James Handleigh take 1st place in the B final whilst in the largest class of the day, the 17-24 males, with no less than 54 competitors Andrew Brooker just failed to make the quarter finals. Royston had three riders in the Masters category (30+) with Alex Shore-Nye missing out on a semi final place but Adam Richards took 2nd in the B final and Richard Townsend took 4th in the main A final and in the Veteran class (40+), Lee Alexander showed that his recent mountain bike experiences in South Africa have not dulled his BMX sprint skills with a clear win. The final classes of the day were the riders on the 24” wheeled “Cruisers” and the ladies 17-29 class saw the win going to Helen Nicholl whilst in the men’s 35-39 class Matt Salmon took 3rd in the B final and in the 45+ class Carl Birt qualified for the A final where he finished in 2nd to round off another fine days racing for the Rockets.

The next event on the regional race calendar is the first round of the East Anglia v South Challenge which is being hosted by the Barking and Dagenham club on May 8th but before that the regional riders will be out n force at the first national race of the year at Peterborough over the 1st May weekend.
