East Anglia BMX
Spring Classic
The start of the East Anglia BMX 2010/11 Regional
Summer racing was held last Sunday at the home of the Royston BMX
Racing club. The turn out of riders was not as high as expected and
even the spring sunshine failed to attract many riders but with over
80 competitors signed on for the days racing. After an exceptionally
dry March the track was not in its best condition but still rode
well throughout the day to ensure the riders and spectators had an
action packed day to star the summer.
Royston had 23 riders registered for the event
ranging from national standard competitors to those taking part in
their first BMX race. The action started with the 6 & Under class
where Joshua Abbott took 3rd and Jack Habershone finished
5th in his first regional level event. The 7yr class was led by
Royston riders with Elliott Bowyer taking first place just ahead of
team mate Charlie Todd who took 2nd. In the 8yr class
another of Royston new riders, James Habershone won the class B
final with Callum Barrow in 3rd and Brendan Salmon taking
4th place. In the 10 year class James King and Ted
Dalleywater battled throughout the day to end up with 3rd
and 4th places with team mate Marmaduke Birt finishing in 8th.
The 11 year class saw another “one – two” for Royston and this time
it was Miles Fisher just heading Daniel Blanche on the line. In the
girls classes Ella Tomsett battled against stiff competition to take
2nd in the 9-10 class with Faye Godfrey taking the win in
13-14’s and Lori Blanche took top place in the 17+ female
categories. Back with the male riders in the 13yr class, Royston’s
Matthew Harris was on form from the start to take 2nd and
in the 15yr class James Handleigh took 1st place as did
Jordan Godfrey in the 16’s and in the 17-24 male class Andrew
Brooker took 4th as did Alex Shore-Nye in the 30+
category. The final classes of the day were the riders on the 24”
wheeled “Cruisers” and the ladies 17-29 class saw the win going to
Helen Nicholl whilst in the mens 35-39 class Matt Salmon took 3rd
and in the 45+ class the ever youthful Carl Birt took the final win
of the event for the Rockets.
The next event on the regional race calendar is the
first round of the East Anglia Summer Series which is being hosted
by the Peterborough club on April 17th. This event includes novice
categories and is open to all riders with registration closing at
11.00 with racing due to start around 12.30.
