ROYSTON REBUILD RIDE

5.06.11

Royston BMX Racing Club went into fund raising mode last Sunday with the 2011 “Rebuild Ride” to raise money for the club’s track rebuild which is desperately needed to keep the club in line with current standards required by the sport as it approaches the 2012 Olympic year. The estimated total for the rebuild of Ł60,000 still seems a long way away but Sunday’s activities which involved 33 of the clubs riders completing no less than 1392 sponsored laps will get the process off to a flying start. The day also saw various stalls and a mini car boot sale plus other fun BMX based activities such as a Reverse Steer bike, a uni cycle and the appearance of a very rare BMX Tandem!

Two riders, Matthew Harris and Richard Townsend both achieved over 100 laps in the time allocated but ride of the day must go to 6 year old Josh Abbott who managed an amazing 76 laps! Miles Fisher, James Kirby and James King matched each other lap by lap for the duration of the event and all three finished with a sponsored lap total of 65 to add funds to the track project, whilst other riders made the day more interesting by trying out less conventional ways of riding with Shane Mills riding backwards whilst sitting on the handlebars – at one point achieving 5 consecutive “backwards laps” to add to his total of 50 laps completed. Also completing over 50 laps were Jack Todd, Lewys Francis, Louis Foreman, Ben Mansfield, Josh Izzard and James Handleigh.

The female club members were also out to do their bit with Helen Nicholl achieving her target of 50 laps whilst Harriet Alexander left her dad Lee standing as she completed 30 laps and Ella Tomsett looking good for a high total until an incident on her 23rd lap finished her days riding.

The raffle was very well supported with a wide range of prizes, many of which were donated by locally businesses as well as club members – many thanks to those for their support. The clubs “Tuck Shop” was also doing good trade and the shelves were bare by the end of the day. A visit from Royston’s mayor, Councillor Robert Inwood was much appreciated as the club cannot maintain it’s development without the support of the Town council and North Herts. District Council who own the land the track is built on.

The next big event at the Royston Club’s track in Burns Road is the club round of the Regional Summer Series on July 10th by which time it is hoped the new cycle access route across the site will be complete which will be the first stage in the overall redevelopement of the site.

Tuesday nights are the regular meeting times for club members with the gates opening at 6.00pm and a selection of coaching, open practice or racing events planned throughout the summer.
