British Cycling
BMX National Series Round 11 & 12
Manchester BMX
2-4/09/11
The British Cycling BMX National Series moved to the
north west for the final two rounds of the series being hosted by
the Manchester BMX Racing Club last weekend where the club put on a
great show to try to regain the title of “event of the year” which
they last held 2 years ago. With around 550 competitors registering
to race on the track that was in very good condition the weather
defied the forecast and apart from a few spots stayed dry all
weekend and made the conditions good for the riders as they battled
for the last few points to boost their overall ranking with a number
of classes being decided by the very last race of the series.
The races cover all ages and the Royston Rockets had
12 riders registered over the weekend and getting the weekend off to
a flying start was Joshua Abbott in the 6 and Under male class where
he made it through to the semi finals on both days but had to settle
for 8th in the B final in both rounds after a fall on
Saturday left him a bit stiff for the Sundays races. In the 7 yr
class Elliott Bowyer made the main A final on both days starting
with a 3rd and then a 6th place on Sunday to move him up
to 3rd place overall in the national rankings. The 10
year class saw James King make the main finals on Saturday finishing
in 6th but a 5th place in Sundays semi final
left him battling for points in the B final where he took 2nd
leaving him just outside of a top 10 ranking with Ted Dalleywater in
the same class making the B finals on both days finishing in 8th
on Saturday whilst on Sunday he grabbed 4th place down
the final straight. In the 11 yr class, where the club had three
riders trying to out do each other, the results were all good with
Myles Fisher taking the win in the B final on Saturday and then on
Sunday eased into the A final to take 4th to move into 7th
overall in the rankings and team mate Daniel Blanche making the A
finals on both days taking 6th and 5th places
to retain 6th in the series rankings just one place ahead
of Myles and returning after an injury Ethan Vernon took 2nd
and 3rd on the two days to move into 3rd in
the rankings – tied on points with the 2nd ranked rider
but just missing out on the “count back” system! Maintaining
Royston’s run of good results the 12yr class saw Aaron Dalleywater
take a fine win on Saturday and then repeated the feat on Sunday
which confirmed his number one series ranking – Royston’s only
national series Champion of 2011. The 15yr class saw James Handleigh
involved in a heavy fall on Saturday which destroyed his front wheel
and kept him out of the semis on Saturday and although feeling the
effects of the crash he fought hard on Sunday to just miss out on a
semi final place in a run off for the final place. The Junior male
class (17/18yr,) saw Andrew Brooker fighting hard for points but
just failed to make the semi finals whilst in the Masters category
(30+) Richard Townsend had a great day on Saturday as he eased into
the A final where he finished in 5th and nearly repeated
the feat on Sunday but had to settle for 8th which was
enough to move him into the 3rd podium position in the
series rankings. The final classes of the day were the riders on the
24” wheeled “Cruisers” and the ladies 17-29 class saw two 4th
places go to Helen Nicholl to maintain her 5th place in
the final rankings.
The next event on the BMX race calendar is the tenth
and final round of the East Anglia Series which is being hosted by
the Braintree club on 11th September with rider
registration closing at 11.00am and racing due to start at 12.30pm
The Rockets will be out in force at this event to protect their
regional top club ranking which they have held by the narrowest of
margins for most of the series.
Royston’s own clubs nights are in now coming to an
end although a winter programme will be run after the regional
calendar for the period is confirmed.. See more about the club and
BMX racing in the region at
