Regional Winter Series 2009/10 Round 3

The third round of the East Anglia BMX Region winter series took place last Sunday at the home track of the Royston Rockets BMX Club who have just received accreditation from the sports governing body, British Cycling, that the club has met all of the criteria to achieve Go-Ride (Sport England) Clubmark status. The club can now use the Clubmark logo on any material relating to the club and it's activities demonstrating to prospective participants the clubs high standards of operations.

The racing attracted over 90 riders from across the region although many stayed at home because of the earlier weather forecasts which indicated rain showers throughout the event. However, the day dawned overcast but dry with a few sunny periods which gave good conditions for the riders on a track that had drained well and was riding as well as ever with only one short rain shower between the semi finals and finals to spoil the day.

For the winter series, novice and expert riders of all abilities compete together to gain points to their series rankings which adds extra interest for the riders and spectators alike and the racing was close and very competitive. Royston’s two female riders at the event got the off to a flying start with Harriott Alexander choosing to ride with the 7 and Under boys where she took 7th in the class B final whilst Ella Tomsett, took another well deserved 3rd in the 10 and Under Girls class. The male riders also had a series of good results and in the Under 7 male class, Alfie Salmon took 2nd in the main final and the 8-10yr male class saw Royston packing the results Myles Fisher also taking the win and Daniel Blanche taking 2nd in the main “A” final whilst in the B final Benjamin Mansfield took 5th and Marmaduke Birt finished in 7th and Nate Ridgewell and Archie York took 2nd and 3rd respectively in the class “C” final. The Rockets took another podium position in the 11-13yr category where Ethan Vernon took 2nd place in the A final and team mate Matthew Harris took 7th in the B final and in the 14-16yr class James Handleigh took 3rd with Andrew Brooker finishing 6th in the “A” final and another new club rider, Max Jenkins took 1st in the class B final. The 17+ class saw Lee Carrick finish in 4th and in the 30+ class Royston’s Darren Foreman took 1st place. The final riders for the Rockets competing in the 17+ Cruiser class  were Carl Birt who took 4th and Matt Salmon finished in 6th place.

Round 4 of the Regional Series takes place on 17th January at Codham Park BMX Club but before then the Rockets have a round of their own winter series programme on December 27th – registration closes at 12 noon. Full details of forthcoming club and regional events will be published soon on the club web site at www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more information on BMX racing.
