Regional Summer Series Round 1

The opening round of the East Anglia BMX Summer Race Series took place last Sunday with a challenge event between the East Anglia and Midlands Regions, this first round of the 2 part challenge being held at the recently re-opened BMX track in Derby. The weather was generally dry but compared to the warmth of the previous week it was cold and very windy which gave difficult conditions in which to race on the very long and demanding track and with over 270 riders taking part during the afternoon the spectators were shown some very competitive racing in all the classes. The “Blue Peter” TV were at the event taking pictures and interviewing riders for a programme to be shown later in the week.

The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had 14 riders competing with the club’s newest member, Myles Fisher, taking an excellent 2nd place in the Novice 8-19 year category in his first major race event and in the expert 7 year class Alfie Salmon took 3rd in the B Final just ahead of team mate Louis Foreman who finished in 6th. In the 8yr class A final Royston’s Ted Dalleywater took 7th, crossing the line inches ahead of James King who battled the wind to finish in 8th. The Rockets only representative in the 9 year class was Ethan Vernon who took the win in style to show his intentions for the coming season whilst in the 10yr class Aaron Dalleywater also took a fine first place in the A final to stamp his mark on the class.

The 13y class saw James Handleigh taking 6th in the class A as did Darren Foreman in the Masters (30+) class. In the 19+ class Richard Townsend’s season got off to a bad start as his chain snapped in his 3rd race bringing him crashing to the ground although this time without injury. The Cruiser classes (24 inch wheels) saw Danny Theedham take 3rd in the 13-15 class whilst in the 16-29 class James Dalleywater took 4th and in the 40-44 class Mark Seaman took a fine win with team mate Danny Ancell finishing in 8th.

Strangely the next event on the race calendar is the final round of the Regional Winter Series at Royston on March 29th where the Rockets will again be out in force to chase points for their ranking positions. This event was originally scheduled for February at Ipswich but the weather caused first the date and then the venue to be changed.

The clubs own Summer Series start in late April with their regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in Burns Road, Royston. Full details of forthcoming club and regional events are published on the club web site at www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more information on BMX racing.
