Last Sunday saw the East Anglia BMX Spring Classic
race hosted by the Braintree BMX Racing Club and unusually for this
year the day dawned dry and bright with just a light breeze for the
riders to contend with. The track had very few damp sections so the
100 plus competitors from across the region enjoyed some fast
competitive racing.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had members
competing across most classes, starting with the Under 6 category
where Zak Blanche-Drammeh took 5th overall and in the class for 8
year old riders Royston packed the podium with James King in 3rd
just behind team mates Ted Dalleywater in 2nd and Josh
Peters taking the win. The 9 yr class was nearly as good with Daniel
Blanche taking 2nd place overall with Ethan Vernon claiming the top
spot and in the 10yr class Aaron Dalleywater kept up the clubs
trophy haul with another win. Moving up the age range, James
Handleigh was riding up in the13-14 year class and battled home for
5th place whilst team mate Aston Blanche took home the 2nd
place trophy. The Cruiser 13-15 class saw Danny Thedam take 3rd
and in the Cruiser 40+ class Danny Ancell took 5th just
behind Carl Birt in 4th. The largest class of the day –
Masters for 30 and over riders saw varying fortunes for Royston’s
members with Dave Godfrey taking 5th in the A final and
Adam Richards took a tumble whilst challenging for the lead and had
to settle for 8th over the line.
The next event for the Royston riders is the first
round of the Summer Series and the first part of a two round
challenge between East Anglia and the Midlands region to be held at
Derby on March 22nd and then just to confuse things the
final event of the Winter Series originally set for Ipswich on
February 15th has had to be rescheduled yet again and
will now be held at Royston on March 29th and is open to
all riders.
Earlier in the month two more of the Rockets
received awards at the annual British Cycling Awards Dinner held
near Manchester. Laurence Mapp was presented with his National
Series Elite Class Champions trophy whilst his father Bernie was
presented with an award for his work as a Volunteer Official at
National and International events.
Rockets
own winter practice schedule has now finished and the summer
schedule will be published on the club web site at
www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more
information on BMX racing.
