National Summer Series Round
9 & 10
The final two rounds of the British Cycling National
BMX Summer Race Series of ten events took place last weekend to the
rebuilt and much improved track of the Bournemouth BMX Club. The
weather was overcast and mostly dry throughout the weekend and the
blustery winds made it feel cold for the spectators but the
demanding track rode well for the 400 plus riders taking part.
Although the rain stayed away on Saturday and overnight the weather
looked threatening as the club and race officials set up for the
Sunday racing but nothing worse than drizzle came throughout the
qualifying rounds.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had 12 riders
competing over the two days of competition with the youngest being
Ted Dalleywater who just failed to get through the qualifying rounds
on Saturday but took 4th in Sundays 8yr class B final.
Two good days racing saw Ethan Vernon take 2nd and 3rd
in the main finals of the 9yr class to confirm his 2nd
place in the National rankings with Daniel Blanche also having a
good weekend as he took 6th in the A final on both days
to put himself into the top 8 of the national rankings. In the 10yr
class Aaron Dalleywater also took 5th place on Saturday and 4th
on Sunday in the A final to finish the series with a 4th
place ranking both days whilst team mate Brad Blanche had a less
consistent weekend as he narrowly missed the finals on Saturday but
did qualifying for the B final on Sunday where he finished in 8th.
The 13/14y class saw James Handleigh unable to make Saturday’s
finals but did take 6th in Sunday’s B final and in the
same class Aston Blanche took a 4th and 3rd in
the respective B finals. In the 19+ class Richard Townsend’s also
missed out on a finals place on the Saturday but on Sunday took 6th
in the B final and in the Masters (30+) category Lee Alexander
overcame a nagging injury with a 5th in Saturdays A final
followed by a 8th after an unplanned exit from the race
track on Sunday although his points tally for the season left him 6th
place in the class rankings. The Cruiser 40-44 class saw Danny
Ancell take 4th and 3rd in the B finals and in
the Junior Female class, Royston’s Katie Roberts rode here last
event before starting at university to claim 2nd in the
Saturday B final and the B final win on Sunday and in the final
category on the track - the Elite class - Laurence Mapp’s season
finished almost as it started with a fall in qualifying on Saturday
followed by another fall in the B final but he faired better on
Sunday to take 5th in the class A final and grab the 9th
place in the ranking table having only ridden half the series.
The next event on the race calendar is the final
round of the Regional Series at Royston on September 6th
and the Rockets will be out in force to chase points for their
ranking positions on their newly revamped track in Burns Road. Rider
registration for this event closes at 11-00am and racing is due to
start at about 1.00pm and will run through the afternoon.
The Rockets own summer programme is now complete and
the regular Tuesday night sessions are coming to a close. Full
details of forthcoming club and regional winter events will be
published on the club web site at
www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more
information on BMX racing.
