National Summer Series Round
5 & 6
The fifth and sixth rounds of the British Cycling
National BMX Summer Race Series took place last weekend with a short
trip up the A1 for the Royston club members to the track of the
Peterborough Phantoms. The weather was wet over Friday night but dry
on the Saturday and the blustery winds along with a lot of work from
club members made the demanding track ride well for the 400 plus
riders taking part. Although the rains stayed away on Saturday and
overnight the weather looked threatening as the club and race
officials set up for the Sunday racing and then the rains came
throughout the qualifying rounds to make conditions very unpleasant
for riders, officials and spectators alike. The event was sponsored
by the Peterborough City Council and EA Ltd. who provided spectator
stands and commentary towers.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had 13 riders
competing over the two days of competition with the youngest being
Ted Dalleywater who just failed to get through the qualifying rounds
on Saturday but took 6th in Sundays 8yr class B final.
Two good days racing saw Ethan Vernon take 2nd in the
both main finals of the 9yr class with Daniel Blanche having a solid
weekend as he won the class B final on the Saturday then took 6th
in the A final on Sunday. In the 10yr class Aaron Dalleywater also
took 2nd place in the A final on both days and it can only be a
matter of time before he takes his first national win whilst team
mate Brad Blanche had a less consistent weekend with an 8th
in the class B final on Saturday but failed to qualifying for the
finals on Sunday. The 13/14y class saw James Handleigh unfortunately
falling sick and unable to ride on Saturday and on Sunday was unable
to qualify for the finals on Sunday and in the same class Aston
Blanche took a 2nd in Saturdays B final but went all the way to the
A final on Sunday where he finished in 8th. In the 19+ class Richard
Townsend’s variable season continued as he missed out on a finals
place on the Saturday but on Sunday took 5th in the B
final whilst team mate Billy Irwin had a more consistent weekend
with 6th and 4th in the B finals. In the
Masters (30+) category Lee Alexander came out fighting with a 2nd
in Saturdays A final followed by a 3rd on Sunday where he
also took a fine win in the Cruiser 40-44 class and in the same
class Danny Ancell took 4th and 6th in the B
finals. In the Cruiser 13-15 class, Royston’s Danny Theedham rode on
Saturday only to claim 2nd in the B final and in the
final category on the track - the Elite class - Laurence Mapp’s
season fell apart with a fall on Saturday saw him lying in the mud
with a suspected damaged wrist.
The next event on the race calendar is the 5th
round of the Regional Series at Milton Keynes on June 14th
which is an Inter Regional Challenge with the South region and the
Rockets will be out in force to chase points for their ranking
positions.
The Rockets own Summer programme is well under way
with their regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in
Burns Road, Royston and recent changes to the track just waiting for
a final resurface as the weather allows. Full details of forthcoming
club and regional events are published on the club web site at
www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more
information on BMX racing.
