The third and fourth rounds of the British Cycling
National BMX Summer Race Series took place over the bank holiday
weekend with a trip for the Royston club members down the M4/M5 to
Burnham - 0n - Sea. The weather was mostly sunny and dry but
blustery winds made the demanding track hard work for the 430 riders
taking part. The event was again sponsored by a company from our
region – EA Ltd – who provided spectator stands, commentary towers
etc. as well as Ultimate BMX who are based in the South West.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had 10 riders
competing over the two days of competition with the youngest being
Ted Dalleywater who again took 7th on both days in the
8yr class B final. Two good days racing saw Ethan Vernon take 1st
and 2nd in the main finals of the 9yr class with Daniel
Blanche having a varied weekend by not getting through the
qualifying stages on the Saturday but won the class B final on the
Sunday and in the 10yr class Aaron Dalleywater also had varying
fortunes as he took the B final win on day one and followed up with
a fine 2nd place in the A final on the Sunday whilst team mate Brad
Blanche had a more consistent weekend with a 7th and a 4th
in the class B finals. The 13/14y class saw James Handleigh
unfortunately failing to qualify for the finals in either round
whilst in the same class Aston Blanche took a 3rd and a 5th
in the B finals. In the 19+ class Richard Townsend’s season improved
for the Saturday with a 6th in the B final although he
failed to make the finals on Sunday and in the Masters (30+)
category Lee Alexander came out fighting with a 8th in
Saturdays A final but was unable to compete in Sunday. The final
class on the track was the Elite class where Laurence Mapp who took
a 3rd on Saturday and had to settle for 8th
place on Sunday after a mid race incident saw him lying in the
dust.
The next event on the race calendar is the 5th
and 6th rounds of the National Series at Peterborough on
June 6/7th where the Rockets will be out in force to chase points
for their ranking positions.
The
Rockets own Summer programme is well under way with their regular
Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in Burns Road, Royston and
