Summer Regional
Series Round 4-
June 15th 2008
Last Sunday saw the fourth round of the East Anglia
BMX Summer Series held at the recently upgraded track Peterborough.
The event was also the return round of the challenge between East
Anglia and the Midlands. Again the weather was dry but black clouds
around the track threatened to turn nasty all day. The event
attracted over 200 riders from around the country, many of whom had
made the trip to get practice on the Peterborough track which is
hosting the British Championships over the August Bank Holiday
weekend. During the afternoon the spectators were entertained with
some very competitive racing in all the classes and at the end of
the day the Midlands maintained their lead in the Challenge although
East Anglia closed the gap and almost took the title as the last few
races took to the track.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had 20 riders
competing with the club’s youngest members getting the racing under
way. Kelly Newall, competing in the Under 6 yr class where he
finished in 2nd place in the B final and in the 7yr class A final
Royston had 4 riders with Josh Peters taking the win, Ted
Dalleywater taking 4th and James King in 6th
just ahead of Marmaduke Birt in 7th. The 8yr class saw Ethan Vernon
putting all his training to good effect to take first place with
Daniel Blanche in 4th and Oliver Snelling in 6th
and in the 9yr class Aaron Dalleywater took 3rd in the A final with
Bradan Blanche taking the win in the B final. The 10yr category saw
Matthew Harris making the class A final where he finished in 8th
just behind team mate Ethan Lewis who finished in 7th and
in the 12yr class Louis Burton finished in 6th. More
success came in the 13yr class with Aston Blanche taking a fine 2nd
place and earning a “Rider of the Day” award and in the 14’s Ben
Gutteridge took 6th. The 16yr class saw Wayne Gutteridge
fighting hard to take 2nd overall just ahead of Royston’s
only female representative on the day, Katie Roberts, who took a
well deserved 3rd place. In the combined Superclass and
17+ class, Royston’s Lee Alexander took 3rd in the B
final as he eased himself back into racing after injury and the
final two classes saw Danny Ancell making his return to the sport
after almost 20 years where he took 5th in the Cruiser
30-39yr B final and Phillip Burton taking 3rd in the
Cruiser 40+ class.
The next event on the race calendar is the fifth
round of the Regional Summer Series which is also the first round of
another inter regional challenge, this time with the South Region at
Hayes on June 22nd where the Rockets will again be out in force to
chase points for their ranking positions. The next major event at
the Royston clubs track in Burns Road is the clubs round of the
regional series on July 13th.
The clubs own Summer Series has started with their
regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in Burns Road,
Royston. Full details of forthcoming club and regional events are
published on the club web site at
