Summer Regional
Series Round
10 - August 10th 2008
Last Sunday saw the tenth and final round of the East
Anglia BMX 2008 Summer Series at the Peterborough BMX track. This is
to be the venue for the British BMX Racing Championships over the
August bank holiday weekend so the regional race attracted a lot of
riders taking a last chance to practice on the Championship track.
Following the wet and miserable weather on Saturday, Sunday dawned
dry although occasional winds gusting around the track made race
conditions difficult for the riders. The event attracted almost 170
competitors from across the region who entertained the spectators
with some very competitive racing in all the classes.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had 20 riders
competing across the age categories starting with the Under 6 yr
class where Kele Newall finished in 6th place in the A final and
Alfie Salmon took 1st in the B final. In the 7yr class A final, Josh
Peters took 2nd place with James King in 5th
just ahead of Ted Dalleywater in 6th and Archie York
finished 2nd in the class B final. The 8yr class saw
Ethan Vernon take a fine win overall with Daniel Blanche in 3rd
and in the 9yr class Aaron Dalleywater took 2nd in the
final with Bradan Blanche in the 7th place slot. The
final of the 10 year class Matthew Harris finish in 7th
and in the 13yr. category James Handleigh took 4th place
whilst in the 14 yr. class Andrew Doherty took 5th overall. The 16yr
class saw Wayne Gutteridge finish his regional series with a 2nd
place and in the same class Katie Roberts showed the flag for the
girls with a 5th place. In the 30-39 Cruiser class, Danny
Ancell took 7th whilst in the 13-15 cruiser class, Danny
Theedam took 4th and Jordan Godfrey took the win in the
11-24 Novice class. The last two riders on the track were Darren
Foreman who took 1st in the Masters class B final and Lee Alexander
who took 6th in the A final which impressed the judges to
win a Rider of the Day trophy.
Once all the rider’s series points are added up the
Royston Club has come out on top of the Regional Club rankings for
the first time in the club’s history. The club also has a number of
Regional Series Champions including Josh Peters in the 7yr class,
Ethan Vernon in the 8yrs, Aaron Dalleywater in the 9’s, Aston
Blanche in the 13’s and Wayne Gutteridge in the 16’s.
The next event on the race calendar is the British
Championships at Peterborough on August 23rd/24th
which is likely to attract up to 600 riders from across the
country. The Rockets own Summer Series has one more race evening to
bring to an end their regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs
track in Burns Road, Royston. Full details of forthcoming club and
regional events are published on the club web site at
www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more
information on BMX racing.
