Summer National Series Round 7 - June 28/29th  2008

The seventh round of the BMX Racing National Summer Season was held last weekend at a new venue in Hartlepool. Practice on Saturday was held in overcast but warm conditions and Sundays racing was completed just as the rain started! The track is one of the longest in the country at 420m and with 6 straights on a slope it is very fast in places with riders testing their brakes to the limit as they tried to negotiate the dusty corners. As usual, it was an action packed weekend with almost 250 riders taking part with 8 of them from the Royston BMX Club.

The highlight of the weekends racing was the Elite class with the first UK rider home winning a place at the Great Britain Olympic trials to be held next weekend at the headquarters of the sports governing body in Switzerland. Roystons big hope for the place was Laurence Mapp who started the day with three difficult qualifying races during which he fell in the first round, took second in the second round and in the final round he slipped his pedals at the start to put him to the back of the pack although he fought back to take fifth. In the three round finals it all came together and after three almost faultless riders took the overall win – and that coveted trip to Switzerland.

The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club youngest member, Kele Newall, in the 6 & Under class took a good 2nd in the B final whilst in the 7 yr class Josh Peters took 3rd in the A final and Super Ted Dalleywater finished in 6th. Royston’s representative in the 8 yr class, Ethan Vernon, was unbeaten all day to keep up his challenge for the number 1 plate at the end of the season, whilst in the 9yr class, Aaron Dalleywater took 3rd in the class A final and in the 11-12 yr. class James Handleigh finished in 5th whilst in the 13-14 male class Aston Blanche found the fast downhill track did not suite his style and he was another of many riders who did not make it through from the qualifying races.

The next event on the calendar is an Inter – Regional race between the South Region and East Anglia which is being hosted by the Milton Keynes BMX Club on July 6th. The Rockets will be out in force for this event with the day starting off at 10-00am with rider registration closing at 11-00am and racing from 1-00pm until about 4-30pm.

The clubs own Summer Race Series started this week after a delay due to rain in previous weeks with their regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in Burns Road, Royston.
