Summer National
Series Round
3 - April 26/27th 2008
Last weekend saw the third round of the BMX Racing
National Summer Season at Cheddar – a short trip from the famous
Gorge!. With practice on Saturday in bright sunshine it all looked
good for Sunday’s racing but the day dawned overcast although the
rains kept off until the commentator called the riders up for the
finals when a small monsoon descended. However, it was an action
packed weekend with over 400 riders taking part with 16 of them from
the Royston BMX Club.
The
Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club involvement started with the
youngest member, Kele Newall, in his first national race in the 6 &
Under class where he took a good 4th in the B final
whilst in the 7 yr class Josh Peters took 3rd in the A
final and in the class B Final Ted Dalleywater finished in a fine 2nd
ahead of team mates James King in 4th and Marmaduke Birt
in 5th – both of whom were taking part in heir first
national as well. Royston’s two riders in the 8 yr class took home
more good results with Ethan Vernon taking 2nd in the A final with
Daniel Blanche taking 8th after a mid race slip on the
wet surface. In the 9yr class, Bradan Blanche took 7th in
the B final and Aaron Dalleywater made the main final to finish in
8th whilst in the 10yr class Ethan Lewis took 8th in the
B final. The 11-12 yr. class saw James Handleigh finish in 3rd
to keep up his challenge for the number 1 plate at the end of the
season and in the 19+ men’s class, Jonathan Roberts finished with 2nd
in the B final of one of the biggest classes at the
event and in Junior Female, Katie Roberts continued her recent fine
form as she took home 2nd place in the A final. The
Masters Class (30+) saw Lee Alexander return to the track after a
long lay off and a podium position in the A final looked likely
until a slide in the last corner promptly dropped him down to 8th.
In the Elite class more success came Royston’s way with Richard
Townsend taking 1st in the class B final and Laurence
Mapp taking 3rd in the main final to continue the defence
of his national title.
The
next event on the calendar is an Inter – Regional race between the
Midlands Region and East Anglia which is being hosted by the
Mansfield BMX Club on May 11th. The Rockets will be out
in force for this event with the day starting off at 10-00am with
rider registration closing at 11-00am and racing from 1-00pm until
about 4-30pm.
The clubs own Summer Series started this month with
their regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in Burns
Road, Royston. Full details of forthcoming club and regional events
are published on the club web site at
