Summer National
Series Round 1 & 2 - March
22/23rd 2008
The Easter holiday saw the opening events of the BMX
Racing National Summer Season at Burnham on Sea. With practice and
racing in round 1 on Saturday and on Sunday racing in round 2 it
was an action packed weekend with almost 400 riders taking part with
11 of them from the Royston BMX Club. The weather was bitterly cold
and windy for Saturday and just cold on Sunday but the snow and rain
sweeping other parts of the country did not arrive until nearly
lunchtime on the Sunday and then only for a short period. The
organisers briefly considered delaying racing, but being wary of the
number of people who had long distances to travel after the holiday
weekend, racing continued and finished well before 4-00pm.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club involvement
started with the youngest members, Josh Peters and Ted Dalleywater
who were competing in the 7 yr class where Josh took a 2nd
and 4th in the A finals and Ted was rewarded with 2nd
place in the B Finals on both Saturday and Sunday. In the 8yr class
Royston’s two riders took home more good results with Ethan Vernon
taking two wins in the A finals and Daniel Blanche taking 1st
in Saturdays B final and a 6th in the A final on Sunday.
In the 9yr class, Bradan Blanche had a variable weekend with a 5th
in Saturdays B final but was unable to make it through to the finals
on Sunday but Aaron Dalleywater made the main final on both days
with 5th and 4th towards his series rankings
whilst in the 11-12 yr. class James Handleigh took a clear win on
Saturday and on Sunday he finished in 3rd. In the 19+
men’s class, Jonathan Roberts started to show his form with 4th
and 1st in the B final of one of the biggest classes at the
event and in Junior Female, Katie Roberts showed that a winters
training was not wasted as she took home 6th and 4th
places in the A finals. In the Elite class more success came
Royston’s way with Richard Townsend taking 5th and 4th
in the class B finals and Laurence Mapp taking 1st and 2nd in the
main final to start of the defence of his national title.
The next event on the race calendar is the Regional
Spring Classic being hosted by the Royston BMX Club on April 6th
at their home track in Burns Road. The Rockets will be out in force
for this event with the day starting off at 10-00am with rider
registration closing at 11-00am and racing from 1-00pm until about
4-30pm.
The clubs own Summer Series starts this month with
their regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in Burns
Road, Royston commencing on April 22nd by which time it
is hoped the weather will of turned warmer. Full details of
forthcoming club and regional events are published on the club web
site at
www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more
