Late Spring Classic June 1st 2008
Last Sunday finally saw what should have been the
opening round of the East Anglia BMX Summer schedule with the Spring
Classic Race meeting which was originally scheduled for early April
but was cancelled at short notice due to overnight snow. The event
was hosted by the Royston BMX Club at their track in Burns Road and
it was hoped that the weather on Saturday could be repeated on the
Sunday with dry sunny conditions but true form this year the heavens
opened just as the club members were setting up the venue and left
the track wet and muddy in places. However almost 100 riders from
around the region took part and during the afternoon the spectators
were presented with some very competitive racing in all the classes.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had over 20
riders competing spread across the age range with the club’s
youngest members, competing in the Under 6 yr class where Kelly
Newall was rewarded with an excellent second place with team mate
Tommy Petchell who finished in 5th. In the 7 class Royston members
packed the class with Ted Dalleywater taking second, James King in
third, Archie York in fourth and Marmaduke Birt finishing in sixth.
In the 8yr class Ethan Vernon took the win with Daniel Blanche in
second and Oliver Snelling in third and in the 9yr class more
success for Royston with Aaron Dalleywater taking first place and
Bradan Blanche taking fifth. In the 10yr group Matthew Harris
finished in fifth and in the 11yr category George Bracewell finished
in fourth. The 12 year class saw James Handleigh taking the win with
club mate Louis Burton in third and in the 13’s Aston Blanche took
second with Harry Bracewell in third. In the Female 7-9yr class
Ellie Mae Bracewell took the win in her first regional level race
and in the 14yr class, Ben Gutteridge finished in third with Aiden
McCall coming home in sixth. Yet more success came in the 15yr
class with Jak Bracewell taking third whilst in the 16 year group
Wayne Gutteridge took the win just ahead of Katie Roberts trying her
skills against the boys and finishing in second and in the 17+ class
Danny Bateman returned after a long break to take sixth. The final
two classes saw Royston riders taking more podium places with Danny
Ancell in the Cruiser 30-39yr class taking third in his first BMX
race for about 20 years and all top three places went to the Royston
club in the Cruiser 40+ class with Tony Petchell taking the win,
Phil Burton in second and Paul Bateman in third.
The next event on the race calendar is the third
round of the National Summer Series at Chesterfield on June 7/8th
where the Rockets will again be out in force to chase points for
their ranking positions.
The clubs own Summer Race Series start on Tuesday 3rd
June at the clubs track in Burns Road, Royston with the gates
opening at 6pm. Full details of forthcoming club and regional events
are published on the club web site at
