Winter
Regional Round 2 - 9th December 2007
Last Sunday the Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club
members were hosting the second round of the East Anglian Winter
Series at their home track in Royston’s Burns Road. The weather was
fine early in the day as the club members prepared the venue but as
the competitors from around the region started to arrive the rain
clouds started to build and the rider practice session took place in
heavy, cold rain and the track soon was under water with the
drainage system overflowing. However, by the time the racing started
the rains had stopped and sterling work by the club got most of the
water away and the riders managed to get a full set of races in.
The youngest riders take part in a class known as
Formula 5 and are nominally 7 years and under. Royston’s James King
took the top place with Marmaduke Birt in 4th and a very
wet and muddy Archie York took 7th place. More success
came in Formula 4 which is a class based on 8-10 year olds and the
Rockets riders had “A” final success with no less than 7 of the 8
riders riding under the Rockets colours. Ethan Vernon took the win
with Aaron Dalleywater in 2nd and Daniel Blanche in 4th
just ahead of Sheldon Best in 5th, Bradan Blanche in 6th,
Ted Dalleywater and 7th and Matthew Harris in 8th.
Royston’s only rider in Formula 3 (11-13years) was Louis Burton
who went unbeaten all day to take the overall victory whilst in
Formula 2 for 14-16 year old riders James Handleigh took 2nd
place in the slippery conditions. The final class on the track was
Formula 1 for rider over 17 years old, which was the largest and
fastest class of the day where in the class A final Royston’s two
representatives had a good showing with James Dalleywater taking 3rd
just ahead of Darren Foreman in 4th.
This was the second round of the series which is
running throughout the winter months, the next round being at
Peterborough on January 20th. The Rockets will be holding
practice sessions at their track in Burns Road where visitors can
try their hand at riding round the track as well as having a chat to
club members about the sport. Full details of forthcoming club and
regional events are published on the club web site at
www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more
information on BMX racing.
