East Anglia BMX Regional Championships - Royston

The East Anglia BMX Summer calendar came to close in bright sunshine at the Royston Rockets BMX Track. The track was very dusty which caused a few riders to slide out on the corners but the racing was fast and furious and with over 160 riders on the race sheets it was an action packed afternoon which ended with the traditional VB trophies East Anglia Relay race which saw no less than 14 teams taking part with one of Royston’s three teams making the final although unable to take a podium position..  

The Royston Club had no less than 35 riders competing at the event with the youngest expert members competing in the Under 6yr class, where all five mini Rockets made the A final with Ted Dalleywater finishing in 2nd just ahead of James King in 3rd and Marmaduke Birt in 5th, Loui Foreman in 7th and Archie Yorke taking 8th. In the 7yr class A final Ethan Vernon took 2nd followed home by Daniel Blanche in 3rd and Oliver Snelling in 5th whilst in the 8yr class Aaron Dalleywater finished in 3rd and Bradan Blanche took 7th. The A final of the 9yr Class saw Ethan Lewis finish in 3rd with team mates Zak Foreman in 6th and Matthew Harris in 7th  and in the 10yr class George Bracewell took 8th. In the combined 11-12 yr. class James Handleigh took another 2nd with Louis Burton in 3rd and Aston Blanche just behind in 4th with Anthony Perrot taking 8th and in his first race Nash Clements took 2nd in the class B Final. The 13 -14yr class saw Antony Taylor coming back from injury took 3rd with Ben Gutteridge finishing in 6th. The 15-16yr male category saw Wayne Gutteridge finishing in 5th in the A final Zak Pegram took 6th in the class B Final. The 17+ class produced some fast and furious racing with club riders trying their skills against some of the top national riders and Royston’s Richard Townsend took a hard earned 2nd with Jonathan Roberts in 7th. The 30+ class saw Royton’s first regional champion as Lee Alexander was never headed throughout the day and Darren Foreman took 3rd in the class B final. The clubs only female rider on the day, Katie Roberts, took the clubs second championship winning ride in the 13+ class and gaining a Rider of the Day award and taking the prize in the class Hole Shot competition which is awarded to the first rider to cross the last jump on the tracks first straight.. In the Cruiser classes  Tom Yorke finished in 6th in the 30-39 class and in the 40+ class Paul Bateman took 2nd and Phil Burton still managed to take 4th even after two falls! An additional race for 14+ riders was held where all the rider’s race fees go into the pot for the top three finalists and Royston had 4 riders signed up with Lee Alexander taking 3rd ahead of Richard Townsend in 5th and Jonathan Roberts in 6th whilst Antony Taylor retired after the qualifying runds to concentrate on the main event.
