EA Regional Round 1
- Inter Regional at Hayes - April 8th
Last Sunday saw the opening round of the East Anglia
BMX Summer Series with the first of two challenge events between the
East Anglia and South Regions. The weather was sunny and warm which
gave ideal conditions in which to race and with over 250 riders from
around the region taking part and with over 170 races during the
afternoon the spectators were presented with some very competitive
racing.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had riders in
many of the classes with the youngest member, Ted Dalleywater,
competing in the Under 6 yr class where he was rewarded with an
excellent third place after a meeting long battle with fellow
competitors. In the 7yr class A final Royston’s Aaron Threader took
second with Daniel Blanche in 6th after a mid race
incident saw him drop back form a podium position whilst in the B
final, Oliver Snelling took the win. In the 8yr class Aaron
Dalleywater took sixth place in the A final whilst in the 9yr Class
Ethan Lewis looked set for a win in the B final until he crashed out
and had to settle for fourth. The 11-12 yr. class saw James
Handleigh finish in third and gain a Rider of the Day award for
being the top 11yr old in the class whilst Louis Burton, also one of
the 11year old riders, finished in seventh. The 13 -14yr class saw
Ben Gutteridge, another of the younger riders in the class take
fourth in the B Final whilst older brother Wayne fought hard in his
semi final to make the A final of the 15-16yr class where he took
sixth whilst Katie Roberts tried her skills against the boys and
took fourth in the C final. The 30+ Men’s class saw a very large
field battling it out with Royston’s Lee Alexander taking fourth in
the A final and in the final class on the track the Elite riders saw
Laurence Mapp making a welcome return from the football pitch by
taking a clear win in the A final and Jonathan Roberts, who was
riding up a class took fourth in the B final after a race long
battle with some of the countries top riders.
The next event on the race calendar is the second
round of the Regional Summer Series – another big event as it is
also the second part of the Inter Regional Challenge being hosted by
the Milton Keynes Club on April 22nd. The Rockets will be
out in force for both these events to gain points towards their
Regional ranking and counting towards qualification to the British
Championships later in the year.
The Rockets will be holding a “come and try” session
at the Royston & District Sports Council’s Sports Fayre at the
Royston Leisure Centre on April 14th where visitors can
try their hand at riding round an obstacle course as well as having
a chat to club members about the sport.
The clubs own Summer Series starts this month with
their regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in Burns
Road, Royston commencing on April 24th by which time it
is hoped the track alterations will be complete. Full details of
forthcoming club and regional events are published on the club web
site at
www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more
information on BMX racing.
