2007 Spring Classic
Last Sunday saw traditional opening event of the East
Anglia BMX Summer Season with the Spring Classic Race at Braintree
and unlike last year, the weather was sunny and even warm at times
although gusting winds did make for less than ideal conditions in
which to race. Over 100 riders from around the region took part and
despite the weather the good condition of the track made for some
very competitive racing.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club had riders in
many of the classes with the youngest member, Loui Foreman,
competing in the Under 6 yr class where he was rewarded with fifth
place after a meeting long battle with fellow competitors. In the
7yr class Royston took top honours with Daniel Blanche taking the
win just ahead of team mate Aaron Threader in second. In the 9yr
class Zak Foreman emulated his younger brothers achievements with a
fifth place in the final whilst in the 11-12 yr. class James
Handleigh finished in second with Louis Burton in fourth and more
second places came from Katie Roberts in the 13and over female class
and Darren Foreman in the Over 40’s Cruiser class. The final class
on the track were the Masterclass riders with Richard Townsend,
taking yet another second and Jonathan Roberts in fourth after a
race long battle with some of the countries top riders.
The next event on the race calendar is the first
round of the Regional Summer Series – a big event as it is part of
an Inter Regional Challenge involving the South and East Anglia –
the first round being held at Hayes BMX Club with the second part of
the Challenge being hosted by the Milton Keynes Club on April 22nd.
The Rockets will be out in force for both these events to gain
points towards their Regional ranking and counting towards
qualification to the British Championships later in the year.
The Rockets will be holding a “come and try” session
at the Royston & District Sports Council’s Sports Fayre at the
Royston Leisure Centre on April 14th where visitors can
try their hand at riding round an obstacle course as well as having
a chat to club members about the sport.
The clubs own Summer Series starts this month with
their regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in Burns
Road, Royston commencing on April 24th by which time it
is hoped the track alterations will be complete. Full details of
forthcoming club and regional events are published on the club web
site at
www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more
information on BMX racing.
