Winter
Regional Round 2 - 19th November 2006
The
Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club have had a busy two weeks with the
club presentation taking place at the Bassingbourn Ski Centre last
weekend and after a session of sliding down hill on a variety of
sledges the members congregated for the main business of the day which
was the trophy presentation. The first awards were for the Club Summer
Race series the 6 and Under trophies going to Ted Dalleywater in 3rd,
Jasia Blanche in 2nd and Daniel Blanche taking 1st.
In the 7-9 year class Anthony Perrot took 5th, Zach Foreman
4th, Bradan Blanche in 3rd, Aaron Dalleywater
finished in 2nd and Ethan Lewis took the 1st
place trophy. The 10-14 class saw Ben Gutteridge in 6th,
Aston Blanche in 5th, Louis Burton taking 4th
with James Handleigh in 3rd and the top two places going to
Wayne Gutteridge in 2nd and Anthony Taylor in the top
position. The 15+ class was less well represented as many of the older
members were involved in coaching and supporting the younger riders
but 2nd place went to Darren Foreman and the win was taken
by Lee Alexander. Following the presentation of the series trophies
the individual annual awards were made with Rider of the Year going to
Jonathan Roberts in recognition of his win at the British
Championships and his work with the younger riders whilst the Member
of the Year went to Ethan Lewis in recognition of his regular
attendance at all events and his positive attitude to racing. The last
two awards are in commemoration of club members who are no longer with
us. The Shane Keeler award for the rider who enjoyed their racing
whatever the result went to Aaron Dalleywater whilst the Rob Indri
award for the most improved rider went to Wayne Gutteridge.
Last
Friday the Club entered a team in the Royston & District Sports
Council quiz – an event the club has consistently performed poorly
in and this years 6th place was all that could be expected,
but the evening was as much a social event as serious competition and
many a laugh was had.
This
Sunday the club members travelled up the A11 to compete in the second
round of the East Anglian Winter Series in Norwich. The weather was
cold but sunny and dry and with the wind dropping the riders had a
good track to race on. Over 80 riders from around the region took part
and the format of the day’s event made for some very competitive
racing with all riders having at least five chances of showing of
their racing skills.
The
youngest class are nominally 7 years and under and are known as
Formula 5 and three of Royston’s four riders in the class made the
main final with Ethan Vernon taking 2nd with Daniel Blanche
in 5th and Oliver Snelling in 8th with the youngest of the
four, Ted Dalleywater finishing in 2nd in the “B”
final. In Formula 4 for 8-10 year olds, the Rockets riders had more
“A” final success with Aaron Dalleywater in a fine third just
ahead of team mate Zak Foreman in 4th. The Rockets only representative
in Formula 3 (11-13 years) was Louis Burton who finished in 3rd
and the two Royston riders in the Formula 2 class had more success in
the “A” final with James Handleigh, who qualified to ride up a
class following his win in the previous round of the series took 6th
whilst Wayne Gutteridge was on fire all day to take a fine win – his
first number 1 spot at Regional level.
The last class on the track was Formula 1, which had no less
than 27 riders taking part with a range of skill and age including
European Champions and Dads out for a bit of exercise! The Rockets
club coach, Richard Townsend made the “A” final where he finished
in 3rd and in the B final Danny Bateman took 5th with
Darren Foreman in 7th after a race long battle with James
Dalleywater who finished in 8th whilst in the C final Paul
Bateman took 4th.
The
next round in the series is at Peterborough on December 10th
where the Rockets will again be out in force. Full details of
forthcoming club and regional events are published on the club web
site at www.roystonrockets.co.uk,
