Winter
Regional Round 5 - 19th February 2006
The
Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club only had a short trip last Sunday to
compete in the fifth round of the East Anglian Winter Series in
Braintree. Although the weather was cold and the wind made it
difficult for the riders, the track was not frozen or flooded which
made a pleasant change from previous rounds. Over 60 riders from
around the region took part and the format of the day’s event made
for some very competitive racing with all riders having at least five
chances of showing of their racing skills.
The
youngest class are nominally 7 years and under and are known as
Formula 5 and Royston three riders in the class all made the main
“A” Final with cousins Bradan and Daniel Blanche taking 5th
and 6th respectively just behind Aaron Dalleywater who
finished in 4th. In Formula 4 for 8-10 year olds, the
Rockets riders had more “A” final success with Kyle Gutteridge in
3rd and the youngest rider in the class, Ethan Lewis in 8th
after a valiant effort mid race to take two places in one corner ended
in the trackside mud. Another two Rockets made the A final of Formula
3 (11-13 years) with James Handleigh taking 3rd and Ben
Gutteridge finishing in 5th whilst Louis Burton took 2nd in
the B final after a few bike problems in the qualifying rounds. Both
Royston riders in the Formula 2 class had a good day with Wayne
Gutteridge taking 3rd overall with Anthony Taylor, who had
qualified to ride up a class took 4th. The
last class on the track was Formula 1 which includes a number of the
countries top Elite riders and Royston’s newest member, James
Dalleywater who took 7th in the B final.
The
final round of the Winter Series is on March 19th at Ipswich. Practice
starts at 11-45am and rider registration closes at 12-00 noon with
racing starting around 12-45pm – or sooner if the weather is bad!
