Spring
Classic - 10th April 2005
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club were competing in
the opening event of the 2005 Sunmmer Season at Braintree - The East
Anglian Spring Classic last Sunday. The track has been resurfaced
after the clubs winter series meeting where the weather made it almost
unrideable and with almost 90 riders taking part the spectators were
guaranteed a good afternoons racing.
This event is the first to be using new age group
categories which has reduced the number of classes but made each one
more competitive In the 9-10 Male class all four Royston members made
the main final with James Handleigh leading the race from the gate for
an excellent win with team mates Louis Burton not far behind in third,
finishing just ahead of Luke Holbrow in fourth and with the youngest
rider in the class, Kyle Gutteridge taking a fine 8th place in the
class. In the 11-12 Male class, the B Final win went to Anthony Taylor
whilst Ben Gutteridge took a hard earned 6th in the A Final. In the
13-14 Male classm, Royston’s two riders, Wayne Gutteridge and
Nicholas Duncan took first and second respectively in the B Final
whilst Royston sole representative in the Master Class category,
Richard Townsend, rode well for a second in the class A Final.
During a break in the racing, the Winter Series trophy
presentation was made and Royston had some very good results.
Ethan Lewis won the Formula 5 class whilst the top of Formula Formula
Four was very close being won by James Handleigh with Louis Burton
just 4 points behind in 2nd and Kyle Gutteridge in 7th. The two
Gutteridge brothers in Formula 3 went right down to the last round
with Ben taking 5th by one point from Wayne in 6th. In Formula 1 Shaun
Doherty was the highest ranked Royston rider as he finished in 4th
with Richard Townsend in 7th.
The recent success shown by the clubs younger riders
especially must indicate that they have benefited from the Regional
Coaching sessions over the winter and we can look forward to some very
good results in the Summer Regional and National Series.
