The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club were host to round
6 of the East Anglia BMX Racing Summer Series on Sunday. Over recent
months the Club has spent in excess of £3000 on re-developing their
track in Burns Road and this was the first meeting, which attracted
over 125 riders from across the region. Unlike many people the club
was praying for overnight rain to help bed the race surface down but
this was not to be and some parts of the track were soft and stony,
although the riders still produced fast and very competitive racing
which presented the spectators with an afternoon of exciting
competition.
The Rockets had no less than 21 riders registered for
the event with four of the clubs newer members taking part in the
Under 9 year Novice class where Kieran Archer – the youngest rider
in the class finished in 6th in the B final, just ahead of
Oliver Hall in 5th with Emily Attridge taking a fine win in the same
race and Daniel Taylor took a well earned 6th in the A
Final. In the 6 and Under class Royston had two representatives,
Bradan and Daniel Blanche were both in their first regional level race
with Bradan taking 5th ahead of Daniel who also was awarded
one of the Rider of the Day awards by the judges.
The 7-8 year class saw Ethan Lewis have a poor day by
his standards as a crash in his third qualifying race relegated him to
the "B" Final, which he promptly won. In the 9-10 Male class
no less than four Royston members were competing with James Handleigh
leading the pack from the line to take a fine win ahead of Zach
Stevens in 2nd with Louis Burton finishing in 5th after a race long
battle with team mate Kyle Gutteridge who had to settle for 6th. The
next class on the track was the 11-12year males where Ben Gutteridge
fought hard in the motos to gain qualification to the "A"
final where he finished in 7th whilst teammate Anthony
Taylor took the win in the "B" final. The 13-14 year old
male class saw Wayne Gutteridge take 5th place overall and in the 17+
class Ashley Seaton took 5th in the B Final with Ben
Godfrey taking 5th in the A final after a long lay off and
Jonathan Roberts kept up his challenge for a top three series ranking
as he took 2nd. The top riders compete in the
"Master" class where the two Mapp brothers had varying days
with Christopher taking a well-earned 2nd and older brother
Laurence finished in 6th.
The final classes on the track were the Cruisers with
Lee Alexander making a come back to racing after 16 years away from
the sport and it looked like he had never been away as he took 2nd
in the 30-39 class which also gained him a Rider of the Day award and
in the 40+ class Leroy Seaton started his return to form with a 3rd
in the final.
The Club members are now taking different routes with
some going to Switzerland for the European Championships and onto
Paris for the World Championships whilst the rest will be taking a few
weeks rest from a very hectic season.
The Royston club’s practice evenings are being held
every Tuesday from 7.00pm. Further details of forthcoming club and
