Summer Series Round 4 - 23rd May 2005

The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club travelled north up the A1 To Peterborough BMX Club’s track last Sunday for the fourth round of the 2005 Summer Series. The weather overnight was not helpful, as the heavy rain had left large puddles in the infield areas, which had to be dealt with before practice could start, but the early morning sun and drying wind allowed the track to dry quickly but the racing was fast and very competitive. With 120 riders registered for the event the spectators were guaranteed an exciting afternoons competition.

The 7-8 year class saw Royston’s youngest rider, Ethan Lewis challenging for 3rd place coming into the last corner of his class A final race when he clipped the back of the lead rider which brought him down so he had to settle for 8th overall. In the 9-10 Male class no less than four Royston members made the “A” final with James Handleigh leading the charge down the first straight until his front wheel slid out and left him sitting on the track watching the rest disappear. However, James’s misfortune was Louis Burtons gain as he kept out of trouble round the first turn to finish in 2nd with Kyle Gutteridge having one of his best rides this year close behind in 4th just ahead of team mate Zach Stevens who grabbed 5th on the line. The next class on the track was the 11-12year males where Ben Gutteridge fought hard in the motos to gaion qualification to the main “A” final where he finished in 8th whilst team mate Anthony Taylor in one of his first rides this year took 5th in the “B” final. In the 13-14 year old male class Wayne Gutteridge rode well for a 5th place overall and Nicholas Duncan finished in 7th with a consistent series of races. The Master Class category was the last and fastest race of the day and Royston’s sole representative, Richard Townsend rode well all day to claim 3rd in the “A” final.

The Club members move onto the second national of the year at Chorley in Lancashire this weekend before returning to Peterborough in mid June for round 3.

The Royston club’s practice evenings are being held every Tuesday from 7.00pm. Further details of forthcoming club and regional events are published on the club web site at www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more information on BMX racing.
