National
Series Round 1 - 1st May 2005
The
Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club were competing in the opening event of
the 2005 National Series at Burnham-on-Sea last Sunday and for the
first time in many years the entry exceeded 400 riders, which ensured
full gates and very competitive racing on the very fast but sometimes
slippery track – and the weather ensured the track was in good
condition after a thunder storm on Saturday so that riders and
spectators alike had a good time.
The
7-year class saw Royston youngest rider, Ethan Lewis battling against
riders from across the country but he maintained his form and recorded
an excellent 6th in the main “A” final. In the 9-year class both
Royston members made the main final with James Handleigh challenging
for a podium position but eventually finishing in a well earned 4th
with team mate Zach Stevens not far behind in 7th place in the class.
Royston’s sole representatives in the 19+ class, Shaun Doherty, took
a spill in his second qualifying race to end his days racing as he
missed out on a semi final place by a few points. In the very
competitive semi professional Elite Class category, Laurence Mapp took
6th in a the main final with younger brother Chris grabbing
third on the line. In the same class Richard Townsend had a disastrous
day by his standards after tangling with a rider from Brazil early in
the first qualifying race, which, in this class of racing, is almost
impossible to recover from. A new class for 2005 is the 16 Plus Pro-Am
which saw both Richard Townsend and Chris Mapp exiting the competition
in the qualifying rounds whilst Laurence Mapp made it through to the
“A” Final where he finished in 5th.
Next
weekend the Royston Club members will be doing battle with the South
Region in the return match at Hayes followed by a normal regional at
Norwich the following week and then moving back into national mode for
round 2 at the Mid Lancs club near Chorley for the end of May bank
holiday.
The
Royston club’s track in Burns Road is undergoing major improvements
so club evenings will be starting from May 10th whilst the rebuild
continues. Further details of forthcoming club and regional events are
published on the club web site at www.roystonrockets.co.uk,
or ring 01763 260959 for more information on BMX racing.
