2005
British Championships
The
Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club travelled to Cheddar last Sunday for
the final event of the BMX Racing Summer calendar, which attracted
over 470 riders to one of the top tracks that overlooks the famous
gorge. This premier event included riders from across the British
Isles so the competition was very intense – with the “01”
champion number plate being the ultimate goal of all competitors.
The
Rockets had 15 riders registered for the event with the youngest
riders were in the 6 and Under class where Bradan Blanche hit
technical troubles even before his first race which put him out of
contention for a semi final place. In the 7-8 year class Ethan Lewis
took 5th place in his semi final, which is generally
recognised as the hardest position to bear, as one higher place would
give a finals place and a crack at the championship. The 9 Male class,
no less than four Royston members competing, with Zach Stevens leading
the pack with an excellent 3rd to claim Royston’s first podium
position, closely followed by Louis Burton finishing in 6th
in the main final whilst James Handleigh had to suffer the pains of 5th
in his semi final and Kyle Gutteridge missed out on a semi final place
by just one point after the qualifying races. The next class on the
track was the 10 year category with Royston’s Aston Blanche just
missing a semi final place and in the 11year males Ben Gutteridge
finished in 7th in his semi final whilst in the 12 year
class Anthony Taylor took 8th in his semi final as did
Wayne Gutteridge in the 13 year class.
Representing
the girls was Katie Roberts who took 4th in the main final
of the 13-15 year female class to record another points scoring
position towards the club ranking whilst here brother, Jonathan, also
scored well as took 5th in the Junior Men’s class. The 19
year and over class saw another great result from Ben Godfrey who took
2nd in the final and in the Elite class Laurence Mapp took
3rd in the A final with Richard Townsend coming home in 7th
in the class “B” final.
In
the Club Championship element of the event the Royston Rockets
finished in 13th place from the 40 clubs taking part, which must be
considered a good result for the club.
