March 2005 Newsletter

2005 Club Membership

Club members have been busy filling in their membership forms and the number of members signed up for 2005 is very good considering we are not yet into the summer season. For those of you who have not yet applied for 2005 this will be your last newsletter so it’s time to get the pen out and complete the form clearly and return it on a club afternoon or to the address at the top. Also, make sure you have applied for your racing licence from British Cycling – licences, like Royston club membership run from January to December. If you have never had a BC membership / licence before then –please contact the club membership secretary before applying to take advantage of a special offer for 2005.

Winter Regional Series

The Winter Series was completed at Ipswich on March 20th and Royston have had some very good results. Provisional rankings show Ethan Lewis won the Formula 5 class whilst the top of Formula Formula Four was very close being won by James Handleigh with Louis Burton just 4 points behind in 2nd, Kyle Gutteridge in 7th, Luke Holbrow was in 11th after taking part in only two rounds and one ride left Luke Gibson in 14th. The two Gutteridge brothers in Formula 3 went right down to the line with Ben taking 5th by one point from Wayne in 6th. Other Royston riders in the class included Nicholas Duncan, Zach Stevens, Anthony Taylor and Kirstie Gibson who all competed in less than two rounds and hence did not make the top 10. Strangely, Royston had no riders in Formula 2 although some of our riders rode in the class as they moved up or down classes as the series rules dictate. In Formula 1, Shaun Doherty was the highest ranked Royston rider as he finished in 4th with Richard Townsend in 7th and Stuart Smith down the rankings after only one ride. The success shown by our younger riders especially must indicate that they have benefited from the Regional Coaching sessions over the winter and we can look forward to some very good results in the Summer Regional and National Series.

 Club Afternoon – April 3rd - gates open 2-00pm

April 3rd was to be a club promotions day but due to the weather and some vandalism caused by mini motorbikes the track is not in good condition so the event has been delayed until later in the year. The track will be open for practice on April 3rd and we hope to have final discussions on the proposed track changes, which will be taking place later in the month.

Royston Rockets Mugs

The Club Mugs that have been ordered will be available soon – just the water leak tests to be carried out!

2005 Summer National Series

There are a few changes to the proposed regulations for the National Series – the main ones being related to classes. The BC BMX Commission has now agreed that the male classes up to 10 years will be as 2004 but two new classes of 11/12 and 13/14 will be introduced for 2005. Female and Cruiser classes will remain as for 2004. Full series regulations will soon be available on the British Cycling web site, which is being redesigned to have a BMX specific section
