March 2008 Newsletter

Club Winter Sunday Afternoons 2007/8

Sunday practice sessions have now finished for 2008 – time to start getting the track ready for the Summer! The first 20T of limestone dust was delivered a few weeks ago and the team soon had 2/3rds of it laid to transform the look and ride of the 2nd and 4th berms and a lot more in between. The rains have helped get it bedded down and another roll and tickle session – hopefully on the 29th March before the Spring Classic should have the track in good condition. After the Classic it is hoped to get a digger in to change the entrance to the 4th berm and tidy up a few other areas so we can give the track another makeover before our mid summer regional.

Club Coaching Session – Thursday April 3rd

Jonathan Roberts has two sessions planned – Under 11’s from 0900 to 1200 and  Over 12’s from 1230 to 1530. Fee is only £10 per rider and if you are interested in taking part please contact Jonathan on 07967816165 to book your self on the session. The one man gate will be used so timed sprints can be measured and you will have chance to practice more on the Random gate before the Spring Classic the following Sunday.

Winter Regional Series 2007/8

Round 6                Peterborough due for 16th March had to be cancelled at the very last minute – about 0900 on the Sunday. The track was in good condition on Saturday but the torrential rains throughout the night left large areas under water – both for parking and riding. There being no other suitable date the Region has decided that the series will be based on the 5 rounds completed and trophies will be awarded to riders who took part in 2 or more rounds. Trophies will be presented at the first regional on April 20th at Milton Keynes

Spring Classic at Royston – April 6th 2008

The regular Summer Season opener is again returning to Royston this year. Registration Closes 11-00pm so do not be late! Your plate should be your 2008 National or Regional ranking plate or the last 3 digits of your licence number – and the plate should be the correct colour. There will be another track tidy up on April 5th in the afternoon but hopefully there will be little to do.

2008 National and Regional Race Dates

The dates for 2008 are now confirmed and are in the East Anglia leaflet with this news letter and in the club annual brochure which is available on request. Feel free to ask for a handful to take to school or local library etc.

 Sponsorship

Unfortunately this year we have not been able to obtain sponsorship for the club to enable us to provide clothing for the riders. We have however been awarded a grant by “O2 – it’s your community” This is specifically for a one man practice gate and the award covers about 50% of the cost and we are hopeful to get more funding to cover the rest so it is available for coaching sessions and “Come and try” events.

Club Membership

Your annual club membership is now due and forms are available from the membership secretary or can be printed off the web site. Please complete and return them, with the fee either directly to the membership secretary or see them at the club meetings. This year it has a few new sections so read it carefully.

British Cycling Membership and Licence.

This is the complicated bit – you must remember that there are two different parts to this. Your BC “membership”, which is on the one side of your BC card, runs for 12 months from when it was issued but your BC “Race Licence”, which is actually an internationally recognised licence, is the coloured side of the card and runs from January 1st to the end of December. So if you have not applied for a licence for 2008 you do not have one now although your membership may still be valid! The colour of the licence changes each year and this colour change is across the cycling world as dictated by the UCI.

Royston And District Sports Fayre – Royston Sports Centre – Sunday 27th April

The RDSC is now formally 'Sport Royston', continuing the many initiatives of 'Royston & District Sports Council'. The 3rd Royston Sports Fayre on April 27th has invited our club to participate but unfortunately this date clashes with the National event at Cheddar. There are different options and if we can not find someone to run a “come and try” session that day maybe we can mount a visual 2-dimensional display that would not be very demanding of human resources.

It is very important that our club should be seen at the Sports Fayre to show what is on offer and has been achieved by your efforts.

Club Web Site –        www.roystonrockets.co.uk

All members are invited to send information and maybe a photo for their own personnel Profile – but if you do not send anything don’t be upset if others do!

If you have anything else for the web site please send it direct via the “contact us” function – pictures, race reports, comments about racing – what ever you like - after all it’s your club’s site!
