Club
Practice Evenings
Although the early season Tuesday
evening sessions were disrupted by the track changes, now that it is
sorted out we have settled into the regular Club Summer Race Series.
With the addition of a few fun races – and occasionally a relay the
evenings are proving more and more popular with new visitors every
week coming to see what we do. The gates open at 7-00pm with
registration closing about 7-30pm and we try to finish by 9-00pm.
These are good times for every club member – whatever their age - to
get gate and track practice as well as learn more skills in race
conditions
Summer
Regional Series - Royston’s Regional on July 3rd
Royston’s round of the Summer Regional Series was
on July 3rd and nearly all club members came along either
to race and parents to help set up and run the event. The event had
125 riders register – including 18 in the novice classes, some of
who have already decided to move up to “expert” classification.
The weather almost came right for us – just a bit too much rain a
bit too early in the week followed by really hot sunshine left the
track a little loose – but those of us who had spent many evenings
rolling and shovelling were pleased that the surface held up as well
as it did. The few rain showers since the regional have further helped
bed the track down so a few more sessions with the roller should see
it in good condition for our meeting in September.
Very many thanks to all those who helped before,
during and after the event – which we would like to think was one of
the best in the region this year. This event should be treated as a
practice run for September!!
British Championships – Cheddar
September 24/25th
As most of you will already know, qualification for
the “Brits” is through the Regional series. You must compete in a
minimum of four of the eight rounds to get an invitation to Cheddar
but there is a dispensation procedure for riders who may have been
injured or regularly competing in BMX race events overseas, which
frequently clash with regional dates. The Regional Committee will also
look favourably on new riders who may of started part way through the
series and only have been able to compete in 2 or 3 events. Please
remember that rides in Novice classes do not count towards
qualification. If you would like to be considered for dispensation
please let Richard Townsend (Regional Secretary) know as soon as
possible. If you are thinking of going to Cheddar please remember the
track is at a commercial camp site so is a bit more expensive than
normal race camping – but you do get all the facilities of a top
venue. Make sure they know you are racing at the “Brits” when you
book your plot – they have plenty of caravan and tent plots and
quite a few static caravans for hire but you will need to book early.
East Anglia Regional
Championships
- Royston on September 18th.
This will be the big one – hopefully 150 plus
riders competing for the East Anglia Champs titles. This event is open
to all riders who are club members – you do not need a race licence
to take part but please note there are no Novice classes. As mentioned
above we will need to do a bit more work on the track – probably
including repainting the start hill lines and numbers and if we have
time the start gate as well – so if you have any old brushes don’t
throw them away! The surface will need rolling and sweeping and some
areas will need a new limestone layer if the weather is right. More
information will be sent out nearer the day but if you want to get
involved in the preparation please let Phil or Maureen know soon.
2005 Summer National Series
As
mentioned in the last newsletter, the early rounds of this year’s
series attracted an amazing number of riders – averaging over 100
more than the same rounds last year.
Round 5 is on August 14th at Chesterfield – just a short run
up the A1 (turn left) or M1 (turn right) – remember for Nationals
the registration and gate practice sessions are on Saturday afternoons
starting at 2pm with early practice on Sunday at 8.30am with racing
starting at 10am!
